A friend said this piece reminded him of the southwestern U.S.  I have traveled in parts of Arizona, New Mexico, southwestern Colorado. I don't remember seeing purple trees and turquoise hikers. I remember the natural light has magical effects. I am a fan of magical realism and love it in art, too.
